Milk Carton Kids @ Largo (5/9/13)

Last night I saw The Milk Carton Kids play the second of two consecutive shows at Largo in LA.

The Milk Carton Kids, the duo of Joey Ryan + Kenneth Pattengale, are touring in support of their new album The Ash & Clay, and they played new songs like “Honey, Honey” as well as older favorites (“New York,” “Charlie,” and “Girls, Gather ‘Round”).

The audience at Largo was really eclectic — people of all ages, and everyone seemed to really enjoy and appreciate the duo’s repartee between songs.

The crowd even (audibly) recognized “Michigan,” the penultimate song of the set, from the song’s very first guitar notes.

Joey focused more on strumming chords and was smoother in his presentation than Kenneth, who was slightly more spastic in demeanor and did more finger picking.

The Milk Carton Kids @ Largo: 10/4/12

Largo is the perfect intimate venue for The Milk Carton Kids (Joey Ryan + Kenneth Pattengale).

The symmetrical, simple stage setup consisted of 4 microphones — 2 for vocals and 2 for acoustic guitars, with a red velvet curtain as the backdrop.

For the most part, Kenneth focused more on string work while Joey strummed. They were dressed pretty formally in suits, and they harmonized and sang most songs together.

On a couple of songs, though, one took the lead vocally. For example, Joey sang his song “Permanent” and Kenneth took over on “Charlie,” a memorable song to his future daughter.

The audience loved all the jokes, stories, and banter between the two. They also told the crowd about the new album of 12 songs they recorded in 4 days.

Highlights: “New York,” ”Michigan,” and the last song before the encore (“I Still Want A Little More”).

The Milk Carton Kids are playing this Thursday (October 4th) at Largo in LA!

Uh Huh Her will play on January 13th @ Largo in LA.
